Cordials for Winter Wellness
Preserving fruits in alcohol is an age-old food preservation practice that brings both the flavored and nutrition of summer right into your seasonal kitchen. These days, with the convenience of freezers, we can postpone cordial making until the winter months when we have more time in the seasonal kitchen to experiment.
Cordials can be sipped as an aperitif, used to flavor cocktails, top ice cream, or flavor meals. They are handy companions for entertaining as they can brighten up foods and moods in equal measure!
Remember, cordials commonly are high in alcoholic content. Be sure to serve them in traditional 1-2 ounce glasses. These are fun to collect and are easily found in second-hand shops.
Speaking of that high alcohol content, only use 80 proof or higher spirits like vodka and brandy for creating cordials. One of my favorites is tequila! This keeps everyone safe from unwanted bacteria and mold in your crafty creations.
As for the quality of my spirits, I tend to go mid-range on price. I want something I can feel good about putting in my body, but I don’t want to spend excessively since the taste will be altered by the fruits, herbs, and spices used to create the cordials.
The Herbal Kitchen
This classic is intended to help even the most average of cooks incorporate herbs in every meal for wellness. There’s an entire section on cordial-making that is worth the price of the book alone!
