The Moon Cycles
If you are captivated by the moon, you may find yourself baffled by its phases as it completes its 29-day cycle around the earth. Not only does the moon have these specific phases from new to full and back again, but it appears in the sky at various times as the cycle completes itself on a near-monthly cycle.
Why is that?
Well, as the moon makes its rotation around the earth, it interacts with the earth’s shadow. This engagement with the shadow of the earth is what creates the phases of the moon.
I don’t know about you, but understanding three heavenly bodies in movement is a little hard for my little brain to visualize. I think this explanation of the moon’s phases from Launch Pad Astronomy is worth every second of the 16-minute video to really understand what we see when we gaze upon the moon.

New Moon Energies
As explained in the video above, the new moon occurs when the moon’s orbital transit brings it directly between the sun and the earth. That is a potent concentration of cosmic energy!
In astrology, we call the alignment of 2 heavenly bodies at the same degree a conjunction. The psychological work of a conjunction is to harmonize the energies of each heavenly body.
Each of the planetary bodies in our solar system embodies and symbolizes specific archetypal energies. Each portends the arrival of certain emotional, psychological, and real-life patterns.
Here, take a look at the Moon and the Sun from an archetypal astrological perspective to better understand.
🌙 The archetypal moon embodies these keywords: the feminine, body, moods, emotions, the mother, child, childhood, receptivity, reflection, passivity, instincts, safety and security, the home, and the unconscious.
☀️ The archetypal sun embodies these keywords: the masculine, the self, one’s life force, creativity, authenticity, authority, consciousness, vitality; it is the organizing principle of the self – the ego.
At the time of the new moon, we have a convergence of the interior, emotional, feminine self, and the external, active, conscious self. With intensional action, we can harness this opportunity to cleanse, renew, and envision.
What is the dark of the moon?
The dark of the moon is the night when the new moon is exact. There is no light upon the surface of the moon. She is not visible.
The dark of the moon is the perfect time to purge. Clear out closets. Fast, if that’s your thing. Empty yourself and your life of all clutter and baggage.
Make room for the new on the day of the new moon by eliminating what no longer serves. Get rid of everything that’s holding up the arrival of your grandest dreams and desires.
I’m a journal junkie, for sure. I especially love to journal on new moon days. I explore the darker aspects of myself…let them rise to the surface and be felt and seen. this is another way of purging.
Journal prompts for the dark of the moon
Use these journal prompts to explore the deeper, hidden, more shadowy sides of yourself.
- The one emotion to release to allow for more joy and love in my life is_______.
- What light in me always shines in the darkest moments?
- Who/what in my life steels my light? How do I get it back?
- The one thing I enjoy about darkness is ______.
- The one place in my home that holds the most clutter is ______. Why is that?
Cleanse and clear away what doesn’t serve at the dark of the moon
If there is an emotion, situation, or circumstance in your life that is holding you back, the dark of the moon is the best time to cleanse that energy.
The best way to begin clearing this enegery is to educate yourself about it.
If you are a clutter bug or hoarder, read KonMari.
If you are a procrastinator, read Atomic Habits.
You get the diea. Just as you learn the best methods for cleaning your possesions, you must research your block. Get to know it intimately from as many angels as possible.
Then smudge, write, dance, sing, burn, scream, pray that energy right out of your life. Ritualize the cleansing with some symbolic act.
Smudging with sage is a great way to keep spaces energetically clean. This skill will serve you well at the new moon and anytime. I smudge after difficult conversations, when guests leave the house, and after deep cleaning. Here’s a useful lesson on smudging to help you build the habit.
Envision what you wish to create
Use the clean slate of the dark of the moon, create an image of your future. Once you’ve explored your deepest self and released what does not serve, you can create a clear image for your future.
When building my vision of the future, I rely on vision boards.
These days, I skip the scissors and glue sticks and use my laptop to create little movies of my desires, wishes, dreams, and aspirations. You can do this easily with Google Slides, but there are many free programs available to create vision boards with virtual tools. Click here for a pretty easy tutorial on making what is called Mind Movies.
Mind Movies are a moving vision board enhanced with music in the background. It is recommended that Mind Movies are watched twice a day, once in the morning and again before bed, to program the unconscious toward your vision of the future.
Here’s a quick little vision board I created using Canva Pro (affiliate link). It’s a nice visual reminder of my priorities and aspirations. I can refer to it several times a day to help me manage my time and make decisions in alignment with my greatest hopes and dreams.
The waxing crescent moon
The waxing crescent moon is that tiny sliver of light that first appears in the eastern sky 3 days after the dark of the moon. The re-appearance of the moon is the perfect time to take action on the vision you created at the dark of the moon.
Start that diet, open that savings account, begin that workout routine three days after the new moon to get the greatest cosmic support for your new goal.
New Moon Solar Eclipses
Twice each year, at 6-month intervals, we get eclipses. While it is always a magical time to see solar and lunar eclipses, they are rare.
Lunar eclipses happen at the full moon. Solar eclipses happen during the new moon. The timing of eclipses has to do with the times of the year when the orbit of the earth intersects with the moon’s orbit. In astrology, we find the eclipses with the symbol called the North Node.
Eclipses are harbingers of potent turning points in our lives. They run in 9 and 18-year cycles. Each cycle is related to a certain astrological house, a particular theme in our lives. I love working with these cycles.
As I am writing this post, we are approaching the new moon solar eclipse in Sagittarius, December 2020. For me, Sagittarius is the sign that holds my 4th house of home and family.
Eighteen years ago, I moved in with my husband, Bob. Nine years ago, we were at one of those momentous peaks in life where everything was operating optimally. Now, we are at a turning point. We are downsizing, and planning for the next phase of our life, which hopefuly will offer another 18 wonderful years of companionship, creativity, and adventure.
Email me and we can talk about your eclipse cycles. These are private conversations. I wouldn’t put them in the coments thread.
Of all the work you can do to create your optimal life, cultivating gratitude in all things is the most important. Gratitude heals, comforts, and attracts love and beauty.
I know it is an overworked concept and everyone is talking about gratitude all the time. Don’t let the noise drown out the sound of the truth! Learn to be grateful in all things if you want to attract abundance…if you want to live in love.

Astrology is not some abstract, esoteric practice. It is a living, breathing connection to the cosmos. A regular astrology practice allows you to know your life has meaning and purpose. That purpose isn’t despite the ways you are always stumbling, tripping yourself up, repeating past mistakes. It is deeply and intimately connected to those moments of struggle, as well as those moments of rapture.
Schedule a reading with me to explore your astrological birth chart and current transits. My style is practical. As an archetypal astrologer, my orientation is toward the beginner. My aim is to inspire a profound sense of self-acceptance and understanding.
